Our wonderful Marketing Assistant Sara Westin-James is going to leave us soon, pursuing her career within Revenue Management, starting as a Revenue Manager at one of the major hotel chains in Scandinavia; Nordic Choice Hotels. At Taktikon, we love helping Revenue Managers to become the best they can be and have developed a tailor made Revenue Management Mentor Program. We are proud to have been part of her career and gratulate Nordic Choice. High time to meet and find out more about her.
We met Sara when she studied Revenue Management at Schartau Handelsinstitut, which offers a unique Revenue Management course which Taktikon has helped to develop and continue to help improve. She was the Event Manager during the 2018 edition from Hotel Market Seminars and went on to work for Taktikon as Marketing Assistant.
What made you want to become a Revenue Manager?
In the midst of moving with my family from London to Stockholm a year and a half ago, I decided to make a new move in my career as well. Having worked as a reception manager in a busy London restaurant for almost 7 years, I wanted to put my experience into a different direction and the practise of Revenue Management turned out to be the answer to my wishes.
Still, you decided to develop further within Marketing Management. Why?
I was lucky enough to be offered a job in marketing with Taktikon only months after moving to Stockholm. Being a Revenue Management consultancy firm, I have had the advantage of keeping à jour with the market, while pursuing my studies and have greatly enjoyed the job. I believe marketing and revenue management go hand in hand and having good insight into other departments and careers than your own can be a key to greater development, knowledge and better communication.
What do you do when you are not working?
I used to run a small food business while in London and still love cooking, fermenting, baking and experimenting in the kitchen. I have three batches of kombucha in the fridge and dandelion lemonade to last the whole summer! I’m a terrible gardener so have set myself a goal of a blooming, edible garden by the end of summer. We have family scattered all over the world and travelling is something that makes me very happy.
Name three things about you that hardly anybody knows
- I have a nutritionist degree which I practise on my family on a daily basis. Not always to their content…
- Even though I was born and raised in the north of Sweden, I’m not destined for a cold climate, so nothing makes me happier than a sweaty bikram yoga session or sunny morning on my balcony.
- My husband calls me the Bounty Hunter, as I love, love a bargain and never go shopping without scanning the shop for deals and bargains and love nothing more than scoring a good deal. Is this why revenue management reasons with me perhaps?
You will start your new job in June, any particular reason your next step is Nordic Choice?
I think Nordic Choice showcase very strong core values in the motto “People, Planet & Profit”. Yes, profit is a given for a successful business, but making sure focus is also on making a positive impact on the planet and creating a great environment for both customers and employees is something I value highly in an employer. Of course, I will greatly miss team Taktikon and I’m sure our paths will cross again soon. Guaranteed, I’ll be on first row at Revenue Forum and Hotel Market Seminars!
